Unstoppable Entrepreneur: 5 Inspiring Startup and Life Insights from Cindy Gallop

I recently had the opportunity to hear Cindy Gallopdoing what you love solopreneur speak at the Montreal International Startup Festival and also participate in a group discussion where she shared her wisdom and insights on- doing your own thing, following your passion as well as that little thing many of us dread called ‘self-promotion.’

Cindy Gallop is a TED speaker and “has turned her illustrious advertising career into a lifelong pursuit of changing the world.”

Below you will find the highlights ..I regret not recording it to better capture the amazing insights that she shared!

1.”You need to stop comparing your inside to everyone else’s outside” -gapingvoid

Because who hasn’t looked at someone’s accomplishments and thought to themselves, ‘man, what is WRONG with me..why am not bigger/better/faster/richer etc’. Well, we need to stop doing that because it’s not helping us move forward! And we can’t always judge the outcome without knowing how much work and effort the person has put in to get there. The social web makes it particular difficult since it seems that people are always sharing the highlights of their lives.

2. There is no such thing as job “security”

cindy gallop

The group eagerly soaks in Cindy's wisdom

Not anymore, at least! And no one cares more about your security than you do! Why not build something yourself and put your security back in your own hands? Instead of working on someone else’s passions and dreams; why not work on your own? And as Cindy mentioned, there doesn’t seem to be a better time than now.

3. “Out of discomfort comes greatness”

Whether that is working with people different from you ..whether  the opposite sex, or with people who have different ways of thinking and approaching problems ..it is only when you get out of your comfort zone does the magic happen.  You have to  experiment and learn new things to keep moving forward.

4. It’s not the title that matters but the value you bring

Cindy mentioned that how after she had resigned from her executive position to work on her own startup, she wondered if she would get the same attention and recognition as before.. However, she soon realized that it was the value that she brought that made people want to  work with her and not just the organization/companies that she represented. I know titles are something that I often struggle with and often not sure what to call myself outside of the corporate world..but this helped bring back the focus on what pain-points can you help people with, what value can you bring and less about labeling yourself.

And one of my favorites..

5. Self-Promotion is not a dirty word

Yet, women in particular tend to struggle with this. But…if you don’t toot your own horn, who will? It’s just a matter of finding the right way of approaching it so you don’t necessarily come off as bragging (all the time) but rather sharing what you are doing and your accomplishments. People are watching and listening and this sends out cues as to what you are all about and what type of work and opportunities you may be available for. Cindy makes no apologies for being prolific on Twitter and sharing her accomplishments and is even proud of being on a few ‘these people brag’ twitter lists! We all need to follow  her lead and show the world how awesome we are more often!

It was really awesome of Cindy to take the time out of her busy festival schedule and share her experiences with us. She is definitely unstoppable and paving the way for more women to follow in her lead.

Thank you, Cindy!

{How to} Record a Skype call

When I started doing video interviews and a question that kept coming up was-

“How do you record your Skype video calls?”

So I thought-what better way to share this information than in  blog post?

I use a PC and tried two tools before I came across one that I  liked and found super easy to use.

The tool I use to record Skype audio and video calls is called Evaer and can be purchased for a one-time fee of $20. Unfortunately for Mac users, this tool only supports PC.

Recording Calls with Skype

After you install Evaer, you will be taken to this screen:

skype call recorder

When you initiate a Skype call, Evaer will be in ‘Ready’ to record mode.

You can set-up Evaer to startup when you start Skype so you don’t forget to record those awesome calls but don’t forget to hit record! (I’ve made that mistake a few times)!

The settings can also be modified to record in the familiar side-by-side or simply record the remote webcam, your local webcam or audio-only.

Hit Record and you’re Ready to Go!

Don’t forget to smile 🙂

Evaer offers several output choices (avi, mp4, mp3..) depending on your needs and you can then easily edit your video in your choice of video editing software (if you need to, or want to add effects).

Simple enough!

Here’s a list of the different websites and tools I use on this site.

Have a tool/website that you love? Share in the comments, would love to hear about it!

An important part of being an entrepreneur is learning from your peers. “Unstoppable Entrepreneur” profiles entrepreneurs just like yourselves who have taken the leap to follow their passion and create their own work & lifestyle. They share their expertise: tips for success, tools they use and valuable things they have learned along the way.

This week I had the pleasure of speaking to Debi Auger of Designs by Debi. She shares with us her tips for branding and the importance of finding your WHY and incorporating yourself into your brand.

Enjoy!

Key Takeaways

  • Branding on a budget: You don’t have to spend a huge amount of money to build your brand
  • Being consistent is important: whether is your Facebook avatar, your logo, your colours
  • People don’t buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it
  • Identify who wants your product and how they will identify with it
  • There are many intangible aspects to a brand: “me” not “we”
  • Sites that you can use to get help developing your logo/website theme: Fiverr, Elance.

6 Ways to Provide Member-Only Access to your Content

Are you pulling your hair out trying to figure out the the technical details of  how to offer your content to members-only?

Let’s face it..there is only so much time in a day and you have big ideas and are eager to get your work out there and make some money, of course!

Worry not, it doesn’t have to be complicated! And there are plenty of solutions out there to help. But first..

Break your Ideas into Smaller Parts

For those of you that know me or have worked with me, you know that I am a big practitioner of the K.I.S.S method (Keep it short and simple) and try to use this approach as much as possible when trying out new project ideas.

It’s super easy to get excited about an idea and then feel deflated when don’t think you have the tech know-how to put it all together.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of reevaluating/prioritizing/breaking down your ideas into smaller chunks and then building on them as you go.

Do you need all the bells and whistles of a social network right away? Probably not. Especially, if you are in the early-stages of your idea/product you may not need all that.

Essentially, you need:

  • a way for people to pay you
  • a way for paying members to access content

Eventually, you can add more features and build a community/forum and way for members to interact but let’s keep it simple to start and focus on having a way to share your work with paying members :).

If your goal is to have a way to have member-only access to your content, here are several options that you can explore.

6 DIY options for offering member-only content

1. Password-Protected Page: You can create a password protected page on your website and only give access to paying members. This is what a Password Protected Page would look like on a WordPress site (password: test).  Note:  branding, pages, widgets are all still visible!

2. Create a Secret/Closed Facebook group where members only get added after they have paid for access. Pretty simple, eh? Cost: Free!

3. Ning is pretty much as out of the box as it gets. I’ve used this network for several years and have never had any problems. It’s easy to customize and has all the familiar social network features. They offer the mini- plan at  $19.99/year for up to 150 members. At this level, domain mapping is not included so you would have a url with yourbizname.ning.com.  I don’t see that as a negative though, considering you could link to your Ning network from within your site or share the link to members after they sign up and pay.

WordPress Specific

4. Optimize Press:  I find for the price ($77) Optimize Press provides a lot of value. You can easily setup your membership site using the templates and divide the content into sections, modules etc. and display a navigation menu and/or side bar that makes it easy to access the content and understand how it is organized. Bonus: You can but choose from many templates and create sales pages as well! You can also install OptimizePress on multiple sites that you own.

I haven’t personally used the next two but they come with rave reviews as well:

5. Buddy-Press:  Everything you need to start your own self-hosted and WordPress-powered social network.   (Opensource)

6. Wishlist:   Easy enough to use that you really don’t need to be a techie to build a great membership site with it. The plugin allows you to build a high quality membership site that looks sleek and is easy to manage as an admin. (single site license:  $97)

So as you can see there are several to choose from depending on what is you need to do!

Is there a tool/technique that you have used? I’d love to hear about it!

Have a question? Leave a comment, I’d be happy to help!

solopreneur growing to-do list

Why I became an Outsourcing Convert Part 1

First off, Happy Summer! Here in the Northern Hemisphere we are heading into Summer and it sure is starting off hot here in Montreal! We’re in the midst of our first heat wave and I had to get out of the house and seek some cool relief at my local Starbucks. As I was walking here, I started thinking of some of things that I accomplished lately and why I have been able to move forward with my goals and get more done.

Outsourcing.

solopreneur growing to-do list

the always growing to-do list!

As a busy solopreneur or someone who is just starting out with their business, you may agree with some or all of these reasons about what is holding you back:

  • How can I trust someone else to do the things that I do?
  • What can I possibly outsource?
  • I can’t spend money on outsourcing, I’m still trying to MAKE MONEY!!
  • I don’t have time to manage someone else (and that’s why I’m doing the solo thing)

Trust me, I used to feel the same hesitation about outsourcing, until recently.

What changed?

Why I became an Outsourcing Convert

If you visit this site regularly, you probably have seen that I interview entrepreneurs and ask them to share their expertise, advice & tips for those just starting out. I’ve been using Skype to record the videos and then posting them on Youtube after some editing.

I started to think about what else I could do with this awesome content…the most obvious being a podcast and then putting it on iTunes.  While that is one of my goals for later this year, I thought about those of us who like to read and process information that way…

Lightbulb moment!

Why not transcribe the interviews!

I could then package the relevant interviews together into a small product and offer it here on my website.

And off I went!

I started organizing the interviews and selected a few that would provide readers with insight on ‘making the leap into entrepreneurship’.

There I was super excited about this new product idea but I soon realized I was faced with the daunting task of transcribing over 75 minutes of audio. Something that I have never done before and seemed kind of painful once I started doing it. #ugh

From High to Low to High Again!

What seemed like a great idea turned into a mini-nightmare. Transcribing is not one of my strengths..and wasn’t something I necessarily wanted to focus on learning.

Should I abandon the idea and move on to something else?

I didn’t want to let the idea go just yet so I decided to finally explore Elance and see what outsourcing was all about.

Not surprisingly, there were tons of people offering transcription services at prices that ranged from super cheap to super expensive. Because this was a prototype product, I didn’t want to spend a big amount and I also wanted to see what the quality of the work would be before committing to transcribing all 75 minutes of audio.

I posted my project as ‘transcribe 20 minutes of audio’ with a budget range and watched eagerly as the bids started rolling in. There was hope that this product could become a reality!

And there were lots of bids..it was easy to eliminate the ones that were way out of my budget and focus on the more affordable ones…..and because you are getting offers from all over the world, you truly see how far your dollar can go!

I started to feel excited about the idea again because now I could potentially get someone to work on it and I could continue doing the things that I am good at and enjoy doing.
