How To Build A Bad Facebook Ad

Want to build the worst Facebook ad ever?

Here is exactly what to do:

1. Decide you are going to write an ad right this second because that’s what everyone else is doing 😛

2. Open up your ads manager and take a guess what type of campaign to run. Reach? Sure! Why not!

3. Select an audience using some guesswork: Male and Female, 25-55, worldwide, interested in ‘coaching’. DONE! 1,753321 is a great audience size, right?

4. Daily budget? $50

5. How long should you run that ad? FOREVER!

6. Image time: grab the first stock photo you see with people sitting around a computer.

You see where this i going, right? This ad is going to fail. Badly.

Why?

Because it was rushed and there was no plan. Take the time to think through your campaign type, audience, photos, and of course text.

Do that and you are already ahead of most of the people running Facebook ads for their business right now.

Zuckerberg gets rich(er) every time you do this 😱

First off, I just need to get this off my chest. I share this with my newsletter peeps every few months but every.single.time I see an ad in the feed and then click over to the website and don’t see the Facebook pixel installed….I’m LIKE WHY, WHY? Why are you just handing over your hard-earned dollars to Zuckerberg like that? THERE ARE MORE FUN WAYS TO LOSE MONEY. Not to mention, less frustrating. Because who wants to pay $$ to get little to no results?

I even posted it on my Facebook profile.

Facebook pixel setup

Because I can’t stand the missed opportunity. When you have the pixel installed and then run ads…magic happens. You get to show up to people who ALREADY have visited your website but may have gotten distracted by other shiny objects before completing their signup/transaction/purchase.

Still with me?

Here is an example of a client retargeting ad campaign that I started a few days ago and the Facebook pixel had only been installed for 5 days when we got these results.

Facebook Ads For Events

Yes, that was 1.67 spent to generate 360 in sales. Do the math. That is a pretty EPIC return.

I’m not sharing this to pat myself on the back but rather to show you what is possible.

Now you’re probably thinking, HOW CAN I GET IN ON THIS ACTION? I’ve tried Facebook ads and they don’t work/are hard/always changing.

Start by installing the Facebook pixel. Not sure how? Watch this free training and get setup in minutes.

Once you’ve setup and installed the pixel, you can then setup Custom Audiences which you will use in retargeting ads.

Whether you are running ads in the next month or a few months from now, installing the Facebook pixel is key to lowering your ad costs and staying top of mind with potential customers.

Facebook Custom Website Audience

How To Setup A Facebook Custom Website Audience

In this video, I’m going to walk you through setting up a custom audience of website visitors.

Why is this valuable?

Re-target website visitors on Facebook
Stay top of mind
Market to a warm audience

To create a custom audience, you will need to setup the Facebook pixel on your website.

This small (but mighty) piece of code helps you target people who have already visited your website while on Facebook.  This lets you target people who are already familiar with your business and also track the success of your ads.
Consequently, you can
  • lower your cost per lead
  • bring in more leas
  • and increase the quality of those leads

Example of A Retargeting Ad

This a an ad that is shown to people who have visited a specific lead magnet to remind them of a free strategy call I offer:

How Coaches Can Use Funnels To Book More Discovery Calls

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you,  I will earn a commission if you click through and purchase.

In this video, I go over how to setup a discovery call funnel and the benefits of having one in place.

Essentially, how it works is having a lead magnet and using the the thank you page as an invite to book a discovery call.

Too often, I will see people leave the thank you page as the default thank you page (for example-Thanks for signing up) and that is a missed opportunity.

Why? Because you have your prospect’s attention and the thank you page is a chance to tell them what to do next. In the case of a discovery call funnel, that would be inviting them to book a discovery call.

Now, you’re probably thinking- how do I weed out the tire-kickers and people who might not be a fit? That’s where a form comes in handy and you can ask a few questions to weed out the people who may not be a fit.

How To See Facebook Ads From Your Competitors

Ever wonder if other businesses in your industry are running Facebook ads and if they are, what they look like? Well, thanks to a new feature rollout (in their efforts to be more transparent) now you can! Check out this quick video below where I walk you through the steps.

Why this is good?

  1. You can see exactly the copy and creative your competitors are using
  2. The countries they are targeting

Why is this bad?

  1. No data: You don’t have any insight on metrics and what is really working
  2. Copycats: Trying to do the same thing that industry leaders are doing

Recommendations

Seeing ads is not necessarily a new thing(remember billboards, magazines, flyers) but it is definitely new for digital entrepreneurs…and Facebook just made it a lot easier.

Use this information as inspiration for your marketing efforts but don’t just straight copy because ultimately you don’t know how much they are paying for these campaigns and if they are effective.
