This week I chat with fellow digital strategist and Canadian, Jackie Johnstone and we dig into Facebook graph search, the pain and reality of Facebook engagement and what you should really be paying attention to.
We also discuss social media ‘addiction’ and how to manage your time better online.

Key Takeaways:

  • Facebook isn’t out to get you- they’re just trying to make the best user experience for everyone..your content needs to be good!
  • Set your settings to US English to use Facebook Graph search (and make sure to use your Profile)
  • Find more groups by doing a graph search “Groups of People Who Like ____”
  • Pick 3 to 5 groups to join and spend time listening and observing how things workThe best online marketing strategy is to show up and provide value. People will find you.
  • Pay it forward Friday: answer questions for your community
  • It’s not helpful to have people who aren’t your ideal client to like your Facebook page since they won’t engage
  • Make sure your profile is linked to your business page so people can find you!!

{E61} Fast Fix Fridays #18 Why should I pay to join an online community?

Why should I pay to join an online community when there are tons of free ones? This is a question I get a lot especially since I run a paid community.

When you pay to join a community, there is some skin in the game and chances are you are going to show up more often, collaborate and get to know people.

The tendency with free communities is to have a lot more “lurkers“, or people who join but never participate or simply only show up when it’s time to promote themselves. It really depends on how well they are moderated.

In my experience with paid communities, you get people who are more committed and you get to build real relationships.

Key Takeaways:

  • When you invest in a community you are more likely to show up and collaborate.
  • Communities are a great way to find collaboration partners and build a name for yourself by sharing your expertise.

Fast Fix Fridays

{E60} Fast Fix Fridays #17 How should I promote my webinar?

This week’s Q&A episode, I answer a question that I get a lot! How do I promote my webinar? I share 5 or 6 ways you can do that which include Facebook ads, groups and communities as well as how early you should start and the most critical email to getting more people to show up.

Key Takeaways:

  • Start promoting your webinar 3-4 days out since people are busy and need to be reminded!
  • Make sure to promote on the day of the webinar, because you will get a lot of last minute signups and send a reminder email 15 minutes before, as well as share a post on Facebook.
  • Promote your webinar in Facebook groups, Google+ communities (where it’s a fit because no one likes a spammer), use Facebook ads to target your ideal client and reach out to joint venture partners.

Key Takeaways:

  • Have a strong support system, join a mastermind group
  • Be transparent, people want to connect with you and your struggles and know that you are real #StopCuratingYourLife
  • Manage your social media time and use apps if you can’t do this by yourself yet

How To Run Your Next Webinar With Google Hangouts On Air

Email marketing and list building, we know we have to do it but how much time do we really spend on it?

This year I decided to make it priority numero uno.

As much as I love social media it moves fast and not every update gets seen.

When you email your subscribers, you are in their inbox, where the chances of being seen are much, much higher.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not dropping social media (not at all!), I’m just focusing my efforts more on my list.

Which brings me to webinars. I love speaking and presenting, I  just don’t love the costs associated with doing webinars (because I was never really doing them enough to justify the costs).

Yet, when I look at the activities in 2013 that brought the biggest boost to my list, it was hands-down webinars. While guest posting is important to develop credibility, in terms of building your list, nothing really compares to webinars when you consider you have a very targeted list of people who have signed up to receive information and possibly buy from you if you have something to sell.

Webinars allow you to share your expertise and further build the know/like/trust factor with your community.

Running Your Next Webinar as a Hangout On Air

There are several reasons that led me to try out and change to this new technology.

  • Save BIG on webinar fees: Google Hangouts on Air are free! No need to pay high monthly fees, especially if you are not doing webinars very often.

  • Unlimited Viewers. You don’t have a limit on how many people can view your Hangout On Air unlike webinar plans which generally have limits and require more $ for more viewers.

  • Share your screen or share your smiling face. You can make it as casual or as formal as you like.

  • Automatic Recording: Your event is automatically recorded to YouTube so no more dealing with forgetting to record! Your recording is ready for replay right after the event.

And by no means is this a “cheap” alternative, industry-leaders are using this very same method to engage with their community and prospects to make sales!

With Google’s Hangouts On Air, you can take advantage of webinar list-building perks without the associated costs.

Here is a screenshot from a webinar from earlier this year: “3 Reasons Why You Can’t Ignore Google+ in 2014” webinar that I ran using Google Hangouts On Air.

Results

My goal was to bring new subscribers to my list so I marketed the webinar outside of my existing list and a 3 month period I was able to grow my list by 35%.

I was not creating new content each time, in fact, it was the same webinar that I would improve upon each time. In terms of time investment, these webinars were around 30 minutes.

I’ve experimented with the time of day and duration, the good thing is with Google Hangouts On Air you can do them as often as you choose! No need to worry about the recording, either. It gets streamed to YouTube and you can share the recording with your attendees after.

Is there a catch?

Google Hangouts on Air is not webinar software so there are a few steps that you have to do manually. For instance, I needed to setup a landing page, which I did easily using LeadPages:

The Tools You Need

As mentioned, Google Hangouts on Air is not webinar software so there are a few steps you need to take. However, you most likely already have the tools at your disposal.

Here is what I use:

Mailchimp: I setup a list specific for the webinar with corresponding autoresponders.

Youtube Live Events: This is where I create an unlisted YouTube event and schedule it for my webinar date. I also grab the embed code for my ‘watch page’.

Leadpages: I use Leadpages for my webinar opt-in page as well as my webinar watch page. The webinar watch page is the page where I embed my Youtube video code. This is the also the link that attendees will receive and where they will show up live on the day of (no need to join Google+). Note: This can all be done with a regular WordPress page.

Chat Roll: I use Chat Roll to engage with attendees. This is paid service but there are many free alternatives you can use.

Powerpoint/Google Slides: I use either for my slides but you can also use no slides at all and just screenshare or go on camera and connect with your audience that way.

The first time I set it up took me the longest as I had to figure out all the moving parts, however, I made sure to document it because once I did the first one..I was hooked!

I often get asked, is this still private? Yes! The way you set it up through Youtube ensures that it won’t get broadcast to your personal profile on G+ or available on your Youtube channel unless you choose to.

In terms of replay, it is seamless since it gets recorded directly to Youtube so you can easily send out your replay emails after and direct people to your ‘watch’ page.

There you have it! You have everything you need to get up and running and make webinars your #1 list building strategy.
